- A-teleological music
”Traditional work (music) is teleological or end-orientated, because all musical events result in a directed end or synthesis.” (Wim Mertens)
”…anti-apocalyptical music, with an extra-historical experience of time, brought about by discarding teleological and dramatic elements. La Monte Young has removed finality, the apocalypse, from his music, and what is left is mere duration and stasis, without beginning or end: eternal music.” (Ron Rosenbaum & Wim Mertens)
- Silence
”…in this new music nothing takes place but sounds: those that are notated and those that are not. Those that are not notated appear in the written music as silences, opening the doors of the music to the sounds that happen to be in the environement.” (John Cage)
”…silence is like fertile soil, which, as it were, awaits our creative act, our seed.” (Arvo Pärt)
